选E。 我有点晕，and后面的its为什么能指代到前面的elephant呢？ 他们不是两个独立的分句么，就说明拆开来读也是可以的，那第二个不就变成to suggest that its trunk ,,,,,  指代不到大象啊，

its指代的问题：【处于主句位置的代词，倾向于指代平行对象的主语。】因为这里是两个that从句平行，而且第二个that从句中的its处于主语位置，所以首选指代elephant。而这又符合逻辑，故没有问题。
