which M7 did you apply for? if HS or W, I'm not very surprised. But if school after HSW ding you, I think the problem is that AO is not convinced that your career goal is realistic or you really know what you want to do
I'm also applying MBA for first time so I don't want to comment from AO's prospective since I have limited experience. I will just talk about your profile and goal as someone who also work in financial industry.
1. i think your background is impressive in average Chinese pool, but doesn't have real edge over other top school candidates, especially compared to US candidates. Basically you have top college name, corp finance 2y (btw, is hsbc corp finance trainee ibd?) + equity research 2y in a lower tier bank, which is just average compared to M7 finance candidate pool: ivy + ibd/er/s&t
2. being average in top candidate pool is not bad at all. if your career goal is clear, you should be able to get at least one M7 offer. But switch to an entire different industry a few month before application definitely hurts your application, unless you have a good story. From what I see here, I'm not convinced.
change from corp finance to ER is ok if you want to enter secondary market buy side (HF/AM). but then why do you go for a corp finance job in industry? Honestly, I don't really see connection here.
if you want to stay in primary market buy side, corp finance job does make sense but then a couple of months w/e doesn't help you either.
More importantly, why do you want to apply for MBA at this time? if you really believe in your career path, you should at least work a couple of years at current role and gain more experience as leverage. Also, if a company can hire a 27 yrs corp finance director, it is probably pretty small and no plan to go public in near term. It doesn't seem like you could touch a lot of deal/model experiences. Even if your work as corp finance director involves a lot of deals, it is not necessary an advantage for PE or HF at post MBA level. They need someone who can do valuation model and execute deal instead of someone who has industry insight and let subordinate do the dirty work. Remember for "high finance" jobs, appropriate level of working experience is important. "Director" title doesn't help at all.
Don't get me wrong. You profile is still very strong for M7 and has chance to shoot for HSW. But you need to carefully think about your career path again and tell AO a better story
ps: you have enough working experience to tell so let your achievement at college go. rule of thumb is, everything older than 3 years is not worthy mentioning. |
