The listening section mentions that investigation have reavealsed predators are most likely to cause the decline of sea otter population since the predators(这里你是不是想说the pollution hypothesis?) weakened by the fact that no one has seen the died sea otter, while the reading material argues that environmental pollutions caused the decline of otter population by the industrial chemical pollution, and moreover caused the uneven pattern of otter decline.

Although oil rigs and other sources of industrial chemical pollution could decrease the otter’s infection, the lecturer says that it weakens not only one kind of animal, other kinds of mammals will also be infected. Thus it constantly shows the predator hypothesis could explain declination is related to the predators.

Second, the environmental pollution always affects the entire ecosystem rather than a single species, these reasons simply leads the reading material conclusion to environmental pollution is factor decline of sea otter. The lecturer, however, mentions that although ocras prefer wheals, but wheals disappear because of human’s hunting, thus ocras might change their diet to the small mammals which are available. Therefore, it causes the decline of all small mammal mentioned in the passage including sea otters.

The lecturer also provides the fact that the pattern of otter decline is uneven can be better explained by predator theory rather than environment pollution theory because the location leads to the access of sea otters. Nevertheless, because the otter is such large that they cannot approach shallow or rocky places, which cause the uneven pattern of decline.
