Agree or disagree: Teachers should assign homework for students every day
I believe most parents and education administrators would strongly recommend the teachers to assign homework for students everyday to ensure the learning quality of the students. Why? Because nowadays students are living in a highly competitive society, if you they don’t work hard and practice as frequently as possible, it is very likely that they cannot catch up with their peers. Thus, it seems plausible for the teachers to leave more tasks to the students. However, will this behavior eventually benefits the students? I doubt that.
For the teachers, preparing for the everyday homework would be unrealistic. They are not just machines producing exercises for the students. There are much more work that is equally or more important to do. They need to prepare for the lecture carefully so that the students can fully understand the message they want to express. In the meantime, they have to deal with all kinds of tough issues of those students. I can always see my teachers are busying persuading students to work hard or dealing with the conflict of some students. Also, they should act as the spring of power, whenever I feel depressed, they will show up in the first minute and try to cheer me up. In this case, they can hardly spare time to prepare the everyday speech, let alone the assignment.
As to the students, what really matters is not how many assignments they have done, but how much knowledge they have gained from these assignments and the teachers’ lectures. The quality of the assignment itself really matters. Think about it, who do you think will benefit more from the process, the students who are forced to finish the boring and meaningless assignments or those who only need to deal with the assignments once or twice a week but find the assignments interesting and useful? So the teacher should not be expected to assign homework everyday but pay more attention to the quality of the assignments. And only in this way can students learn more efficiently and quickly.
Another thing needs to be mentioned is the students’ reflection towards the assignments. Assigning homework for the students is not a one-direction action but more likely to be a kind of communication. The teachers use assignments to test level of the students while the students use their response to reflect their weaknesses. In this process of emission and reflection, not only the students can have a better understanding of their own situation, the teacher also benefit a lot. They can improve their teaching approaches and know more about their students.
All in all, the teachers should carefully decide the amount of assignments for the students by considering in the students’ perspectives. Every teacher has his/her unique style, and it is important for them to find the most suited method of teaching.
