To leoca

My cousin went to US for her MBA in 1999 and I suppose she applied in 1998. At that time, things were much different from they are today. Graduates with 2 years of w/e in Big 4, like her, seemed easy to get top tier offers. While today it is much harder to get a Stanford admission with only 2 years w/e in Big 4 and average GMAT/GPA, etc.

Of course my cousin had an outstanding GMAT of 780, which helped her to get not only Stanford Admission, but Iowa's full scholarship as well. However, it's already 7 years since then, many situations have changed and it might be of less sense for you to benchmark her seriously. You'd better refer to the Big 4 applicants recently, especially those in your firm.

Best Regards

If in the long run you’d like to settle and live in the US, the apply to US schools and take whatever offer you can get.

-What if you cannot get any offer in US although you tried very hard.  You only have two choices-Illegally stay there or come back to China.

Well, if in the long run you’d like to settle and live in the US, then obviously you need to somehow come to the US first.  That’s why I said that such folks should apply to US schools and take whatever offers they can get.

Of course there is always the possibility that after 2 years, tens of thousands of dollars, with an MBA degree, one may still not be able to find a job and thus stay in the US.  I guess the only sensible decision in such unfortunate situation is to go back to China (except for girls to marry a US Citizen Husband).  Staying illegally in the US is absolutely nonsense.  Why on earth somebody want to degenerate him/herself into an illegal immigrant, while he/she has a good education and the option to go back to live a decent live in China?

To certain extend money is quite important a consideration in the MBA decision.

Attending a top US MBA program can easily cost USD100K or more.  Most people take loans to cover expenses and tuitions.  The student loan payment will become a not-so-small burden after graduation.  I have seen some folks forced to give up what they truly want to do and take a high paying (also high stress) consulting/IB job with the simple desire to pay down the debt and regain their financial freedom.  Some even lamented that “The debt has closed more doors than the degree has opened”.  This is why I suggested earlier that if you believe your future is in China and your long term aspiration is to go back and work in China, you should really be carefully of what kind of schools you apply and what kind of offers you take or not take.

On the other hand, I have seen many folks, some without MBA, and some with MBA from top Chinese programs, doing extremely well in China.  So in my opinion going to a top Chinese program is certainly a viable option for folks who believe in the future of China.  In the Chinese labor market, I personally don’t think there is much differences between the job market competitiveness of top Chinese MBA graduates and that of graduates from 3rd tire or no-name US MBA programs (other than that US MBA graduates may have better English language ability).  Unless you are from top US programs, most Chinese employers, multinationals or local firms alike, will not treat you and pay you differently simply because you have an US degree.  Even for those with top US MBA degree, it’s getting harder and harder every day to demand a very high compensation package from Chinese employers.  “Global pay” is a practice that is gradually falling out of favor – only few big consulting/IB firms still offer it.  In the end what really matters is each individual’s competitiveness and value-generation abilities.  Why would an employer overpay if it can get equally good quality from local MBA graduates?

So, I guess that jeremy2000 indeed has asked an important question that, agree it or not, everybody who is applying from China should carefully think through.

The information on the Web is so mixed,  I just saw on another setion of this forum that people with any US MBA degree can easily get $50k in China.

Where is the link?  That sounds too easy an overstatement :-)

Here is my take:

If in the long run you’d like to settle and live in the US, the apply to US schools and take whatever offer you can get.

If you believe that in the long run your future is in China, then:

- if you can get into top tier (top 10 or 15) schools, take the offer and come.  Worry about the money later.

- if you get offers from second tier (15-30) schools with good money (scholarship >= half tuition), also take it.

- if you get offers from second tier schools with no or little money, carefully consider whether you should go to the best Chinese schools like 中欧,光华 or 清华 instead.

- be really skeptical whether you should prefer third tier US schools to the best Chinese schools

Totally agree with Robertchu‘s idea!!! hands up!!
