Dears,

Some question in Manhattan edit5,
1) ask for help
2) for reference to others, you may search within, if you hold that question as well.
CST update, thanks everyone first.

[solved]
Charpter 2
RIGHT:There are many people who speak English but whose parents do not. (page57)

whose and who could modify the same noun.(exception to the rule following)
RIGHT: the consultant is looking for a café that has comfortable chairs and that provides free internet access. (page 62)
Why WRONG: the consultant is looking for a café where there are comfortable chairs and
that provides free internet access. (page 62)

1) we can't use two different relative modifiers to modify the same antecedent, namely "where and that" --> modify "a cafe".
2) "there are comfortable chairs " are not parallel with "provides free internet access"

Chapter 6
WRONG: Well-informed people know that Bordeaux is a French region whose most famous export is the wine which bears its name.
RIGHT: Well-informed people know that Bordeaux is a French region whose most famous export is the wine that bears its name.
QUSTION: why we can't use which to modify wine? Is it  about whether "bears its name" is essential meaning in the sentences?
If it is, then i find we can use this rule to eliminate a lot of choices in SC questions.

RIGHT: the consultant is looking for a café where there are that has comfortable chairs and that provides free internet access. (page 62)
(are you sure the second sentence right?)
Why WRONG: the consultant is looking for a café where there are comfortable chairs and that provides free internet access. (page 62)

first, you can not modifier the same place with two different relative pronouns, namely "where" and " that". second,  "there are comfortable chairs" and "provides free internet access" are not parellel.

RIGHT:There are many people who speak English but whose parents do not. (page57)
RIGHT: the consult ...

Thanks a lot first,
and i did make a mistake. in the second sentences, we should delete"where there are", kind of bug when i paste it, sorry for that.
first, you can not modifier the same place with two different relative pronouns, namely "where" and " that".
I understand for this, but how to explain the first sentences:
* RIGHT:There are many people who speak English but whose parents do not. (page57)
Can we count it as different modifiers(who/whose) to modify the same antecedent(people), or there is something different?
second,  "there are comfortable chairs" and "provides free internet access" are not parellel.
thanks so much, i ignore this expression.

Thanks again! ;)

yes, these two pronouns can modify the same noun.
you can just memorize this rule.

ONLY “who and whose“ can modify the same antecedents? is there any other exceptions for that rule?
Thank you dear =]

Hey dear,
when i review Manhattan, i read this: (page57)
The subordinators ( whose/who/where/that...) do not have to be identical.
So how to interpret this?
thank you !

IMO, MANHATTAN actually takes "who" and "whose" as an exceptional example.
considering the following sentence:
There are many people who speak English but that do not speak Spanish.
does it make sense?
absolutely not!
maybe " when" and " in which" can interchange, I guess.
but I never see one, just as i told above.
although this form is grammatically right, it is not ideally parallel.
