这道题目一直没搞懂过。正确是E。平行结构我看懂了，但OG解释是it 指代前文主语，也就是owning and living，但是前文不是有一个its指代house了么，同一句句子里的it和its能指向不同的目标么？

第二it的用法不是代词,代词只能指代noun, 而这里的it指代的是整个句子主语owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land，是Placeholder It的用法,而Placeholder it是没有先行词的;

比如: IT is futile TO RESIST temptation. (因为主语较长，把主语TO RESIST temptation 后置，it来填补它的位置 )

题中后半句也可以还原为：It was a goal of ealier generatioins to own and live in a freestanding house on its own land.
