因為which引導的從句沒有緊跟在它的先行詞colonies後面而是在animals後面，引起了歧義。

這是個現在分詞做狀語的結構：可以這樣看，each colony consists of a single reproductive female and workers that defend her，但如果真寫成這樣，那就是兩個完整的句子，兩個完整的句子直接要麼用句號要麼用分號。既然已經是逗號，後面的句子就不能是完整的句子而只能是前面句子的一個成分，所以將後面句子的謂語名詞話變成主句的狀語。each是形容詞修飾colony。

我一直觉得，理解成each of which修饰A of B 整体，和理解成each of which 修饰B我觉得都没有错，两种都是可以。所以在确定修饰对象上，用subgroup modifier(each of which) 就没有用一个absolute phrase (each colony consisting..)明确。因为each colony consisting.., 这个absolute phrase 明确了自己的逻辑主语就是colony; 而each of which..., 读者还要选择是逻辑主语是colonies，还是animals.
