Claim: Major policy decisions should always be left to politicians and other government experts. Reason: Politicians and other government experts are more informed and thus have better judgment and perspective than do members of the general public. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based. While it is basically true that politicians and other government experts exhibit better judgement than members of the general public because they are more informed, major policy decisions can be better off if taking the recommendations of the general pulic into account in addition to politicial and government experts. Admittedly, better judgment and perspective can be made by more informed politicians and government experts. Firstly, experts possess immense and exclusive information. There are various institutions and departments responsible for processing and analyzing all kinds of information such as the total amount of population, the overall development of national economy, the employment and unemployment and so on, which are accumulated over different areas and wide-range times. What’s more is that these information are exclusive to the general public but only open for certain group of people in leadership. With all the material, it is reasonable to say that experts are in higher ground to have better judgment and perspective. Secondly, the nature of politician’s and government experts’ job give them some edge in making judgments. What politican and government experts regularly do is dealing with lots of information and accessing all the information to make judgment to act thus they are more familiar and have more experience to judgment making. However, that politicians and other government experts are more informed to have better judgment and perspective is not substantial enough to exclude the general public from making major policy decisions. The first reason is that no matter how intelligent individuals or a group of people are, adding up all people’s intelligence together is always better. Different people share different living experience; Different people are at different positions of the society and have a more insightful view of what they do specifically; Different people have distinct thinking patterns and may come up with varied and creative ideas at the same problem. Therefore even though politicians and government experts may exhibit better judgment and perspective, taking the general public’s voice into consideration is always conducive. Besides, major policy decisions are concerned with all the people so everybody has the right to be part of the process of decision making and because of policies’ regard of the general public, everyone would try their best to make their contribution to them, which is obviously beneficial. Moreover, better judgment and perspective don’t preclude corruption, which can be forestalled by the general public’s involvement into policy decision making. So a better way leading to better policy decisions is a joint dicussion between government experts and the general public. Government experts can come up with some different policies to make the same decision, then people give their advice on those policies and experts revise the policies based on the advice, finally if there are still several controvesies, everybody can vote to decide which policy decision to be made. To sum up, though politician and other government experts are usually more informed to have better judgment and perspective as a result of enjoying more resources and possessing more experience, major policy decisions can benefit from gathering general public’s intelligence together rather than leaving all the decisions to be made by politicians and other government experts. |
