Mascot(吉祥物)=动物?

not necessarily. Stanford's mascot is a tree.

Yes, a mascot is supposed to bring luck. Often it is used in colleges and even sports. For example, there is a football team called Detroit Lions. The team has a person who dresses in a lion suit; he is the mascot. Sometimes an animal is a mascot; a dog that supposedly brings good luck. The dictionary definition is a bit vague, but we use mascot when referring to a good luck charm for these such as teams or organizations. For an individual person, we call it a good luck charm. Yes, plants can be also. In fact, my college's sports mascot is a nut. A person dresses up in a nut costume.
