我个人觉得这道题没有正确答案。
原因如下：
虽然曼哈顿认为第四个是正确答案，但是第四个改变了原文的含义。
原文是说是否往西能到达印度，但是D选项说是否能达到印度，个人觉得意味不一样。

我觉得答案是D，没有疑问啊，A选项说哥伦布被国王送去看是否他能通过向西航行到达印度；D选项说哥伦布（被国王指派）向西航行去看是否他能到达印度。没有任何改变句意啊~ 而且rather than和instead of如果在其他条件都一样的情况下，肯定选rather than啊，道理是连接比较的对象来说，instead of没有rather than的对称性好 （instead of连接动词的话一个是ing形式一个是动词原形，而rather than都是动词原形，词性上更对称）

同意没有正确答案的说法。D中having been的用法有何道理？
having been在GMAT中就从来就有见过出现在正确答案里。

这道就刚好应证了你昨天说的rather than的问题哈！

GMAT里如果有rather than 和instead of的话，基本选rather than，可排除 C,E.然后 如果有if 和whether 必选 whether，排除了A B, 所以选D. 不过这个纯粹根据新东方语法笔记来做，基本为了做题而做题了，没有看意思，不过是个验证的好方法。

呵呵，我的这些原则是久经考验的哈，是新东方的一个大牛老师总结的，好像我没发现“在其他条件一样的情况下”rather than不选选instead of的情况。这些个结构优化方面的原则我个人觉得可以尝试性的听取，但不要把它们作为做题的首要突破口。gmat的语法题一般有3类错误，一类是语法错误，一类是语义逻辑错误，一类是结构优化性错误。一般题目至少有3个错误选项都有不止一个错误，上手做题一定记得要先用第一和第二类的错误去排除一些明显的错误选项，语法错误比如缺少谓语啊，主语和谓语不一致啊等等，语义逻辑错误比如逻辑主语和实际主语不一致啊，因果关系变成了转折关系啊等等。千万不要一上手就用结构优化性错误去排除选项，因为这不是致命错误，千万不要舍本逐末啦~

我本来选的a,但是发现a用被动的话句子会有歧义，有点变成国王不信地球是平的，而不是哥伦布，虽然d的having been 看起来很奇怪，很有误导性。

对对对！最先应该找硬伤。上面那题语义上后半截应该排除用被动的选项，最后就只剩C, D了
