我的理解： 智能生命是否存在这个问题是不确定的。

因为我们不确定跟我们不一样的东西有可能是什么,(暗示有可能以后不能被称作是智能生命。)

所以我们不能定义智能生命.只有在leave our definitions open to new, unimagined possibilities 的情况下,才有可能定义智能生命.

Its focus is not on the question of whether intelligent life exists elsewhere itself.

The indication of the main point is: if you ask this question, you are implicitly defining what intelligent life is. And this is wrong. Because if you try to define it, it would make the pursuit of the question impossible. (counterproductive)
