楼主，你的题目有点问题，在B选项中appeared前面是有个that的。
我也支持E，原因：
1、B绝对的头重脚轻，ETS不可能用这种句子当正确答案，E强一点。
2、D的the特指从古到今就这500万种，应该是符合句子意思的。
3、B中的appeared是过去时，说明这个动作至少很有可能现在不再继续了，和vanish语意重复。
4、我觉得老外的语感至少和我们的分析有同等的力量。

B. 1)  appeared on earth 过去时，说明 所有的 species 已经 appeared 过了，现在都不见了。

          所以就不用说99% 如何如何了吧。

     2) 另外，B 得主语好长，头重脚轻哎。

     3)  99% of  the species 应该好一些。

还是选 E 吧。

我觉得是E对。

这题除了时态之外，B和E都是对的。但是E的时态更好，感觉应该用完成时态。其实，B的过去时态也好像说得通。但是原文是完成时态。因此，偶趋向于E。

另外，从句子结构看，肯定E比B好，如果不信，就找学英文的朋友问问就可以了。

这里显然应该用主动而不是被动

记得初中英语竞赛也有这样一道呢，Of开头就已经是明确规定范围了，在...之中

而且按照英文头重脚轻的大忌也应选E

这里的creatures that have appeared 是限制性定语从句，特指应该用the five hundred.....

另外bigmouse说的“E的逻辑意思不对，它意思还有其他没有出现在地球上的物种存在”，我认为没有必要去追究。因为题目里谈的就是迄今为止，曾经在地球上出现过的生物（have appeared用法正确），不可能去谈没出现在地球上的物种。退一步说，即使有其他没出现在地球上的物种，也与本题无关（这是语法题，不是逻辑题哦，呵呵）
