求问 OG13 语法118题 except问题

OG13 语法118题

Mauritius  was  a  British  colony  for  almost  200  years,
excepting for the domains of administration and  
teaching, the English language was never really
spoken on the island.
(A) excepting for
(B) except in
(C) but except in
(D) but excepting for
(E) with the exception of
我是这样想的，首先这里需要一个连词连前后的两个句子，那么A被排除；except for是复合介词，没有excepting形式，D也排除；E肯定不对了，剩下BC；我查了一下except词性，有连词词性，那为什么B不对，是因为这里需要对比？只有but能表达对比的意思吗？求解答呀~~~~

从结构上来说but在这里是并列连词，即coordinating conjunction；except虽然是连词，但是是conjunction adverb，类似于however等。
逗号+Conjunction adverb 不能连接两个主句，必须由并列连词连接连个主句，所以这里but是必须的。
如果不用but，则需在except前面用分号（；）形成并列主句。

我觉得，这主要还是从句意来分析。BUT作为转折连接了前后两个部分，excepting作为状语修饰后一句。

逗号 + but, and, yet。 表示一句新的句子开始。作用就相当于 句号 和 分号

我知道这些是coordinating conjunction 啦，只是我之前查过的conjunction adverb 中没有except。不过谢谢啦

我觉得楼主一开始的理解是正确的。except 确实是连词，连接了分句: the English language was never really spoken on the island。逗号+but 。则断开了前后两句完整的句子。

怎么会这样？ 兄台，答案是C，这里连词肯定是要用的，因为有两个完整句子啊，必须要断开这两个独立的句子啊，这是没有疑问地

Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, but except for the domains of administration and teaching, the English language was never really spoken on the island.

句子1: Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years

因为，逗号+but，作用如同句号或者分号，断开两句句子

句子2: except in the domains of administration and teaching, the English language was never really spoken on the island.

except 在句子2中作为连词，连接后面一句完整句子:the English language was never really spoken on the island.

(b) is a run-on sentence.
"X was Y, except in Z" would be a sentence by itself.
therefore, "X was Y, except in Z, A was B" is a run-on (you can't tag 2 complete sentences together with a comma).

嗯嗯 说到底还是说except不是表并列的连词coordinating conjunction，comma+except 不能担当连接连个对句子的大任，而but是可以连接这两个句子，表示并列的。 明白了，看来，还是要看以GMAT的要求为准，不能光查字典，容易歪解词意。 谢谢walt！
