求教此题的D选项，难道were confident后面不是应该有that吗？此处that并没有在从句（they could safely...)中充当object，因此是不可以省略的呀

这里的that其实就是一个有效性的问题，没有that含义理解不会有问题对吧，和这句理解是一样的：she said she would come，没有that是可以理解的对吧，那就没问题，但是这句 a sign （that） households were confident （that） they could safely你把that加上了，句子反而更加啰嗦冗余，结构不清，两个that从句能这么放着吗？？？是并列呢，还是嵌套呢？。。。。。反正是应避免使用that X that y这种表达。

但是我记得Manhattan里说say引导的句子后面可以不用that，但仅仅是say
至于这个避免两个that嵌套……感觉还是有很多例子有两个that的吧……

不只say后面可以省略that，只要能够清晰的被理解，一般来讲，that引导宾语从句时，that可以被省略掉。

gmat里尽量避免x that y that，x to y to, x for y for等结构，og上有一题就是为了避免所以把evidence后面的that改成了to do,我记得是：...evidence to suggest that...
关于宾语从句，我有不同的理解，如果很单纯，不是为了避免这些不好的结构的话，宾从的that是不能被省略的，而且如果宾从有很多并列的话，每一个that都是不能被省略的~ 这一点好像在manhattan，prep都有提到过，而且很多题也是以此作为split点的，例如：a poll suggests that...,and that...后面一个that显然不能省~~

其实和LZ有相同的困惑，LS们的解释感觉有点道理，但是还是有点牵强。。。不过暂且没找到更合理的解释，那我就默默接受这个解释了吧。。。
好吧，我的措辞很redundant和wordy...

其实gmat好多自己出的题干就省略了that，在其他的选项都不对的时候如果不加that也不影响意思表达的话就也没问题。
