Independent Writing: Is there a good reason to be impolite (rude) to another person?

Politeness usually refers to good manners and etiquette. While there are many people who often act impolitely in social lives, I believe that there is never any justification for being    impolite to others.

Firstly, we can express our ideas more clearly, if we behave politely during communication. For example, lots of bosses shout at their employees in order to require their subordinates to achieve certain performance targets. However, these employers may not be consciously aware of the fact that they have not offered a clear instruction to their staffs. Even worse is that those staffs may be too afraid to ask questions due to their bosses’ anxiety, which result in a potential vicious circle.

Furthermore, being impolite is a direct cause of breaking a friendship. If we act rudely, we are more likely to create tension and misunderstanding. For example, the fierce conflict frequently arouse when we persuade our friends to do something aggressively and that is why these conversation end up with making our friends angry. Another disadvantage is that the rude manners may cause misunderstandings. If you attend a party far later than expected and keep others waiting, your friends may regard your being late as a sign that you are unwilling to participate in the party.

Lastly, some impolite behavior may violate etiquette and laws in many countries, which will bring about plenty of troubles. If we do not behave properly to others, we may offend them. For instance, wearing off a face-covering veils of a Muslim woman can be accused of violation. As a result, we should follow etiquette and behave politely, in order to avoid irritating other people.

In conclusion, under no circumstance can we behave rudely while communicating with others because we may not talk clearly, break a friendship or violate etiquette while being impolite.

Independent Writing: Is it easier to maintain good health than in the past?

Many people have certain health issues nowadays. While I accept that people may be under pressure, I believe that it is easier for citizens to maintain good health than for the older generation.

Firstly, as the quality of life improves, people are able to purchase enough food and to eat more nourishment. During the Second World War, many people died of thirst or starvation under nutrition, not to mention millions of people suffered the disease of under-nutrition. Instead, with the introduction of the modernized farming, people are able to access nutritious food which has greatly improve people’s health level. In addition, people now can consume fish oil supplements or the vitamin C in order to boost immunity if they want.

From an educational perspective, thanks to the better education, People with a better education are more likely to realize the importance of health. For example, illiterates are more likely to take drugs. Besides, people are now able to acquire more knowledge about how to stay healthy. A person with a bachelor degree tends to have basic medical knowledge and first-aid measures which is critically important in case of emergency.

Moreover, people live healthier and more comfortable thanks to the medical advance. We have seen vaccination has preserved infected people who would have succumbed to small-pox. We can live healthier than ever before because large epidemic diseases have not been outbreaked widely by using the vaccine. People are at less risk of dying if they have the influenza and that is partly thanks to the availability of the penicillin.

In conclusion, it seems to me that we are more likely to live healthily than in decades ago because we are able to eat more nutritious food, receive better education and modern medicine.

Independent Writing: Should company use public recognition to reward hard working, not to use money.

Incentives mechanism is a complex way of motivation, which can determine the success of organizations. While I accept that rewards and recognition can energize workers, I believe that remunerative incentives would be more effective.

On the one hand, recognition can motivate employees. Firstly, all human have a need to feel valued and respected. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, if people get respect from others, they will feel a sense of achievement. That is why so many graduates intend to engage in professions such as working in a law firm or being a doctor. For workers, earning great reputation means that their achievements have recognized, which can greatly enhance job satisfaction. In addition, people tend to be confident in working when they receive recognition and appreciation from the outside world. Employees will be certain that what they do is right and that the firm needs their contributions.

However, I would argue that financial incentives would be more popular among employees. From a realistic perspective, money is a tool for maintaining a basic standard of living. Without money, we are unable to buy food, afford the mortgages and pay for health care expenses. Furthermore, we tend to connect material possessions with happiness and success. Most of people aspire to earn more money because they want to own bigger houses and more luxurious automobiles. For example, many bankers like wearing the Armani suit, living in the Manhattan’s Upper East Side and driving the BMW car. This is because material wealth are status symbols. Lastly, money provides a unit of account that serves as a standard to measure value. We have seen that the most direct measure of employees’ contribution is the money they make for themselves.

In conclusion, it seems that compared with public recognition, the monetary incentive is more effective measure to motivate employees because it is a more realistic method to incentive workers who need more money in exchange for the necessity, to enjoy a better life and measure their contributions to the organization.

Independent Writing: Do you agree that students taking school organization and activities club is as important as their academic class.

Extracurricular activity is very popular in schools, which play an important role in students’ life. While I accept that taking part in school organization may bring about negative effects to teenagers’ learning process, I believe that participating in extracurricular activities is as important as what we do in the classroom.

On the one hand, taking part in School activities are usually time-consuming. Some students spend most their spare time in working on an organization. Thereby, students are unable to allot sufficient time to prepare for standardized tests which are prerequisites to attend universities. Furthermore, it may be hard for students to concentrate on studying while engaging activities, which is rooted in the fact that too many works in the organization can distract students’ attention on textbook. Compared with the TOELF official Guide, most extracurricular activities can be more engaging and entertaining. That is why adolescents are more likely to spend time in playing in a basketball court rather than staying in a study room.

However, I would argue that these drawbacks are outweighed by the benefits. To begin with, setting up extracurricular activities such as sports or music can help students to maintain a regular schedule, which can develop students’ good habits such as to be diligent, punctual, and to rise early on the morning. In addition, we have seen that working in an organization can mould students’ characters. For instance, students become accustomed to coordinating with others after experiencing team works in a school activities. Besides, the combination of studying and playing enable a student to have many abilities. After playing a drama, youngsters will benefit from rehearsals because these activities cultivate students’ creativity, leaning ability, expressiveness and collaboration. Most importantly, lots of activities is helpful supplements for youths’ learning in class. As practice can motivate students to explore sciences, students can develop a deep interest in astronomy by using an astronomical telescope provided by a school organization.

In conclusion, it seems to me that participating in extracurricular activities is as important as attending academic class because these activities can develop students’ good habits, mould their characters, help them to foster various abilities and enhance their interest in academic study.

Independent Writing:  When you are assigned an important presentation for work or school, you prefer to work on it right away so that you can work on it a little bit every day, or wait until you have a good idea about the presentation?

We are all familiar with the procrastination phenomenon which refers to the act of putting off important tasks to a later time. While I accept that both handing off a stressful task of making presentation until a further day may help people to cope with the anxiety, I believe that working on the task little by little would be a better measure.

We have seen that delaying the task until the last day may cause many problems. Form a psychological perspective, procrastination in presentation may result in stress and a sense of guilt. We would always be absent-minded and fearing that we cannot fulfill the task when we delay the task over and over again and these feelings combined may promote further procrastination. Therefore, we may be unable to fulfill the task by the due day. Furthermore, the poor performance is often linked to making presentation with procrastination phenomenon where students begin to apply themselves to a task immediately before deadline, with bad results due to lots of careless mistakes.

On the other hand, a good presentation normally requires plenty of preparation.  For example, a MBA candidate would less likely to make an excellent presentation related to the Banking industry, if he or she does not conduct intense research on the Basel Capital Accord. In order to deliver a good outcome, students require lots of time to write a well-organized speech and create effective PowerPoint slides. In addition, True success comes from the gradual accumulation of efforts, including gathering experience and searching for information. We have seen that every tomorrow we may find out mistakes we made yesterday. Thereby, we can summarize problems, continue to improve presentation skills and produce a better result. Most importantly, simply a little bit every day, we are able to fulfill the task without haste and panic because we can establish a balance between making a presentation and hanging out with others.

In conclusion, it seems that presentation should be prepared as soon as possible, and that it would be less trouble to work on it immediately because little by little, we are able to prepare well, to accumulate more experience and make a presentation even easier.
