可以这么说，因为local artisans‘这里是所有格形式出现的，所以they不能直接指代，而且整句话看下来后面还有them，这个要指代buddha images，一句话中代词的主宾形式应该都指代一个，那前面的they变得只能修饰buddha images了，不合逻辑。所有格要指代最好也用代词的所有格。

从相对的观点来看，可以这么说，的确是they，them指代不一致

从绝对的观点来说，they的逻辑指代就是artisan


当然LS说的十分在理，以后根据LZ说的点来分析就可以了

这里的they 指代的是images。 楼上虽然说这个英文不合逻辑，但其实翻译过来并没有问题。
Buddha images and on construction and decoration of the temples in which they were enshrined
后面把which和they带进名词，从句就变成了：in the temples Buddah images were enshrined. 在佛的画像被祀奉的庙里。
