我没说equipped是过去式哟~

一定要研究语法结构的话这个叫做The perfect infinitive

v. to+HAVE DONE用来区分动作发生的先后顺序，如He pretended to have seen the film.["pretended" describes a past condition; "to have seen" describes something prior to that time.]  即，你骗你朋友说，你和胡书记有合影。那么，theoretically你和胡书记合影的动作必须必须必须发生在你骗你朋友之前，不然就不科学了。

如果非要用过去式，这里也应该是appear to be equipped。 appear as + adj同样不科学。

原意是appear to固定搭配“似乎”的意思。如果做题时把appear另一个意思“出现”来理解就容易选错为appear as equipped...，错误理解为“作为具有了XXX的人种而出现”。
不知道这样理解正确否？

只是不明白，这样的话appear为什么不用过去式appeared

有道理
可是即使是作者的推测，可是appear to 的主语是the Neanderthals ，主谓一致应该是主语决定谓语吧，后面的句子用indicates事因为主语是disappearance这个事件。
