Perhaps no issue is as significant to human beings as improving the quality of their lives. Despite various responses people may have on the topic concerning the issue whether the most significant improvement for the quality of people’s lives have already take place, I, given the chance, prefer to endorse that although we cannot neglect the remarkable changes in our lives due to the incredibly fast development of science and technology, the most outstanding advancement is still on its way because of the following aspects.
To begin with, even though the technology and science are moving forward, the improvement is unbalanced in different regions. There are still tremendous number of people who still not get reach of these profoundly achievements, such as computers, internet and digital camera etc. Many people, under so much pressure at work, are just satisfied if they have enough food or shelters. There is an example to back up my point. Lily, my college roommate, came from a underprivileged family in Guizhou, one of the underdeveloped cities in southwestern China. Her parents, the wheat peasants, are now doing the various harsh works at a construction site with a tight salary of 2500 yuan per month, the equivalent of 400 US dollars. Their lands have been taken by local government because of the industrialization. Under such a harsh living condition, Lily has to hunting for part-time jobs in order to complement the daily spending and tuition. Otherwise, she has to drop out of school to relieve heavy financial burden of her family. Do not mention have the extra pocket money for "luxuries" like laptop or Ipad. There still have many Lilys around our daily life. Even though the technology has been improved, the people who still fight for their survival still irrelevant with the progress of modern society due to the imbalanced resources distribution.
Besides, science and technology can be a double-edged sword, which not only boosts the diversity of commodities we can chose, but also affects people’s living conditions in a negative ways to some extent. With the developing of our modern society, more and more people have the higher criteria of their living standards. They are more likely to pursuit a healthy, organic living style. In order to pursue the high profits brought by huge demands of these kinds of customers, merchants try their best to minimize the costs of operations to offer some inventions that we have never seen before. In order to pursuing the extra money, they even do not care about the qualities of the products they made. Because of advanced technology, some manufacturers started to make the capsules by the leather. How ridiculous it is! In order to make milk tasty, chemical elements have been added to artificial milk made by Sanlu, one of the most historical milk manufacturer in China. I can not imagine what babies will suffer after they drink these "chemical solution". I can not imagine what patients will suffer after they eat the leather capsules in a hope that the disease will be cured.
To sum, technology and science development do improve our living standards, it has brought tremendous innovative objects to our life. When it comes to whether the most significant improvement has been taken place, some other factors, such as imbalance distributions and some side-effects should be considered. |
