issue 54 in order to become well-rounded individuals, all college students should be required to take courses in which they read poetry, novel, mythology, and other types of imaginative literature.
The fierce social competitions urge everyone to become a well-rounded individual. Before going to the real social, some people think all the college students should be required to take courses which are the kind of imaginative such as poetry, novel and mythology. But I’m in the opposite place, how to become a well-rounded man depends on the individual themselves.
Admittedly, pure scientific research without the aid of imaginative works and humanities will be meaningless for the progress of human society. Something like poetry, novel and mythology, those imaginative literatures could enrich students’ spiritual world and inspire their creativity and imagination. But there still are some problems about this compulsory course.
First off, mandatory attending of these courses may cause repulsion of students, and may not bring desired effect. For some students who have already read a lot of such works, if they are forced to take in these courses, they may feel boring; even cause them to lose interest on it. Moreover, reading too much such material may lead students to indulge in illusions and unrealistic imaginations. And nowadays the huge strain on students is hard to be ignored, spending much time taking those courses may take away time that could be used for deeper research on their own field of study and might impede the process of learning. So not all students need to take such courses and not all of them are suitable for these.
What’s more, not all universities and colleges are capable of providing high-quality courses in such fields. Just thinking for pure science universities, there has not the teachers who are very proficient in such fields, so the quality of the education about imagination cannot be guaranteed, which maybe is also a waste of time for students.
When it comes to the well-rounded individuals, it means one cannot be educated just by several courses; after all, only learning and no practicing could people know how to apply their knowledge to reality's situation? College is required to offer chances to develop students' other core skills, such as how to overcome obstacles, how to communicate with others, how to respect others, and so forth. And the cultivation of the ability of critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving is also essential for college-education. Only books in addition to practice can someone become well-educated and well-rounded.
To sum up, though imaginative literature could provide people with much spiritual thought, nevertheless, it cannot suit everyone and is not everything. To develop well-rounded individuals, which require students to take other courses outside their field of study, not necessarily courses on imaginative works could also help students to think and observe from various points of view. |
