| 1. Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a " alean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean. Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

It had been believed that a special kind of woven basket was made only by the Palean people, however, with the discovery of this kind of baskets in Lithos and some weak deductions, the statement jumps to the conclusion that the baskets were not uniquely Palean. However, the evidences are not strong enough and the deductions fail to take several factors into consideration.

The argument first states that The Brim River is very deep and broad and ancient Paleans could not get to the other bank only if they took advantage of other tools. However, it lacks significant evidences to prove that the geographic environment near Palea Village hasn’t changed significantly since the time Paleans existed. It might be that at the ancient time, land instead of river like The Brim River existed between these two villages or The Brim River was just a small stream, through which the ancient Palean could wade through easily. If such assumptions were true, then the baskets found in Lithos were very possible to be brought from Palea since the wide river as a barrier hardly became a problem, which largely undermines the conclusion that such baskets were not uniquely Palean.

If a large river did exist in ancient time, still, we need more evidences to prove that the baskets can only be brought to Village Lithos by boat instead of other methods. However, it is very possible that these baskets were put on the river and flowed to the other village with the help of the water stream. Apart from this, baskets are also possible to be brought by birds to the other bank. Evidences are needed to approve that neither by water stream or by birds the baskets couldn’t be brought to Village Lithos.

It is said that no boats have been found, however, it doesn’t equal to no boats had ever existed. We need evidences that the Palean people didn’t acquire the skill to make boats. Because any traces of pictures about boats or tools can be utilized to make boats is very possible to undermine the conclusion that the baskets cannot be brought to Village Lithos.

Finally, all the arguments and deductions surround the people and related situation in Palea. However, it is very likely that the baskets found in Lithos were actually from Palea but they were brought there by people in Lithos or outside Palea. For example, peole in Lithos might be  capable of making boats and they just brought the baskets by their own boats; other people might bought the baskets in Palea and later brought to Lithos. Therefore, we need more evidences about the boat-making skills in Lithos, the possiblity that there were some merchants from outside of Palea and that the baskets as a kind of cash equivalent in Palea.

With the special kind of basket appearing both in Palea and Lithos, we need further evidences like the record of geographic environment change, behaviors of Palean people and other possible factors to rule out the possibility that the baskets in Lithos were originally from Palea.
