Universities should require every student to take a varietyof courses outside the student’s field of study. At university, a student learns to be a better person andprepares himself/herself to contribute to the society after graduation withwhat they have learnt. Hence I quite agree with the claim that each studentshould not only delve in his/her majors but also study some courses outside hisfields. Notwithstanding, whether every student has to take courses other thanhis majors or whether universities should make such requirement remainsdebated. With the advancement of science and technology, more andmore disciplines are interrelated; as a result, learning more courses outsidethe major is conductive to study a subject more thoroughly. A student who is only expert in his own majorscannot meet the need of this subject any more. For example, a math major isexpected to get some knowledge of computer science, such as Matlab, Stata, andR for they can get a better understanding of the relation of differentvariables with the help of these computer programs. Moreover, learning psychology as well associology will help a student majoring in Public Affairs get a wider view ofhis own major. As is said, the world is flat. Globalization leads the labormarket to be more demanding than ever. Big companies are eager to hire moreinter-disciplinary talents to compete better with their rivals. Say, financialinstitutes employ students with mathematics majors for they can designfinancial models for customers. Many engineersin the Silicon Valley are also familiar with marketing knowledge because theyneed to satisfy the need of the customers with their new products. In order tobe more competitive in the labor market, learning more outside the major fieldis of importance for a student. Albeit it is necessary for a student to learn more besideshis majors, universities should not make such requirement for a variety ofreasons. The most consequential reason is that a mandate will burden the students, and they might be tired of learningso many courses. Correspondingly, they probably learn those courses withperfunctory attitude. Therefore, a good intention might cause a bad outgrowth. Orperhaps some students have spent most of their time on their majors, so morecourses will wear them out. Therefore, the best strategy for universities is toencourage their students to take more courses outside their fields instead ofcoercion. As we live in such a time when science and technology areadvancing so fast, knowledge in multiple subjects is a necessity for a student. With numerous learning resources, university is the best place for a student tolearn whatever they are interested in to prepare for the future. Universitiescould encourage their students to learn more besides their majors, yet neverforce them to do so.
