Because I can't find "try doing" in OG,( if you can, please show me a sign) I believe that ETS does not support the usage of it, meaning "try to" is the only choice.

同意这里的it指的是language，这道题的意思应该是distinguishing between language and sublanguages, or language and dialects within it .

try的用法，ETS应该只承认try to do，不承认try doing

这里counting是名词，虽然longman中没有查到，但是金山词霸显示这个是名词，意思是“计算”。如果count是动词，也应该是及物动词，后面要跟宾语的。
