A: the diet of ....was largely vegetarian ....., and rare meat. 首先，the diet was vegetarian and meat不合逻辑。第二这个rare meat会产生歧义，rare meat可以表示肉的数量少，也可以表示是半熟的肉，那这句话就变成diet主要是素食的和半熟的肉，不合逻辑。所以还是E最合适！with 的独立主格结构修饰diet。with + n.作宾语+as..介词作宾补

你还不了解什么叫独立主格，什么叫同位语，根本是两种不一样的语法修饰，建议去看看语法书。

我把我知道的说一下，觉得meat a rarity是个独立主格，独立主格有N+N的形式，

eg. He fought the wolf，a stick his only weapon．他和狼搏斗着，唯一的武器是一根棍棒。 (http://forum.chasedream.com/dispbbs.asp?oardID=23&ID=108599&page=1)

所以meat a rarity是一个一般独立主格结构，与主句形成松散的逻辑关系，而with独立主格与主句形成紧密的逻辑关系，区别就在于这道题需要的是一个紧密地逻辑关系吧，需要NN更深入的求证。
