In this sentence, the main frame is  xx times + noun+ of... ; what is equal to the price that....

got one example from google: "hundreds of thousands of these Americans could have paid their medical bills if they were not (literally) three times the price that the same hospitals charge their insured patients. "

"three times the price of what ... charges for ..." sounds awkward. if this usage is right, what does "what" stand for?

that 引导的是同位语从句, 后面的从句用来解释price。

D: 如果what 指代price，则出现price of price。但price of sth.中的sth需要是另一个对象，如price of the watch手表的价格。

E: at which 中的at似乎不妥。如果看作定语从句的话，变成charge for sth. at (price)。应该是charge (price) for sth. 如the maker charges 30RMB for the drug.

斑竹啊，的确按你所讲the thing that很说得通，但是[the thing]不要只用that就够了，也就是说without the thing the meaning of this sentence has not been impeded or without any loss in meaning（这种解释og上蛮常见的吧）。你说呢？当然，逻辑与结构上D都是没有错的，应该是比concise吧。

I'm in preference of D (of what).

When putting "that" in the sentence, it doesn't sound right when speaking the sentence out. And right after the comma, is it ok to put "that" at such a place?

I think "three times the price (get rid of the middle part) of what the drug maker charges for another pill...", then the "what" brings out the remaining of the sentence pretty smoothly.

No significant evidence to proof why it's right, but it does sound much better than "that" in my opinion.
