90. Educators should take students' interests into account when planning the content of the courses they teach.


Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.


Is there a need for educators to consider the students’ opinions and suggestions when making the courses setting? The speaker claims so, for the reason that interests are the best teacher to provoke students’ desire for achievement in that field. I agree insofar as that students, undoubtedly, would benefit more from courses if they have eager interests. At the same time, however, teachers and educators are more experienced when it comes to the issues of choosing courses and requirements from students are likely to disturb their judgments.



Admittedly, students’ satisfaction about the change in courses setting will add to their enthusiasm and motivation on study. After all, it is students who are the beneficiaries of curriculum, thus what the students feel matters so much. To be specific, if a student felt unsatisfied with a course, then his or her antipathy would definitely reflect on poor attention, passive performance as well as low grades, all of which is the least expecting outgrowth both for educators and students themselves. One apt illustration involves an authoritative research from The University of Hong Kong which conducted among eighty-five universities and colleges around the world. The research shows that the quality of graduates of approximately 89 percent universities that design curriculum according to students’ interest and inclination is much higher than that of universities that disregard what students would like. Thus, educators have to emphasize the important role of students’ ideas in teaching.



Blindly insisting the significance of students’ thought when designing curriculum, nevertheless, would impede the all-rounded cultivation of elites for society. Although I am not proficient in psychology, observations and common sense tell me that it is human nature to eschew something difficult to complete no matter it is decisive in their future or not, due to which instead they may show inclinations to choose subjects more superficial and relaxing. Some curriculum is indispensable to nurture one’s critical thinking pattern, inculcating our students with the core values upon with any democratic society depends to thrive and even survive-values such as tolerance of others with different viewpoints and respect for them, but courses to impart these skills are likely to ignored by students themselves. If course setting depends merely on the interests of students, society, to some extent, would regress for the sake of the lack of reasonably informed, productive members.



Ultimately, and perhaps the most importantly, too highlighting on interests of students will obstruct the final goal of education-to enlighten. Supposing that interests of students is the only criterion of course setting, then any disciplines are forced to make efforts to provoke students’ interests towards them so as to acquire the survival ability. If it were the case, in some social scientific fields excessive delicate pictures and anecdotes of celebrities have to be added into textbooks, distracting learners from concentrating on the knowledge it imparts. Moreover, for some abstract disciplines, theories physics for example, it is difficult, even impossible for them to utilize such approach to appeal students’ attention successfully, thus the development of them suffering ignorance of educators and staying stasis.



To sum up, purely insisting on voices and calls of students will stymie the judgment of educators on course planning. The optimal method is to moderately adopt students’ suggestions and to consider the effects of subjects on cultivation students’ ability.
