26) The luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
The statement in actual includes two claims: one is contemporary life is luxury and convenient and the other is that the luxuries and conveniences inhibits people developing into truly strong and independent individuals. While I approve of the former claim since it seems automatic that the development of technology is beneficial for people to be more convenient, I cannot wholly acclaim the later claim since whether the luxuries and conveniences do really prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals depends on how to use the luxuries and conveniences.
There is no doubt that the advancing technology has a great influence on bring luxuries and conveniences to our life. In the ancient time, people in the west wanted to the east might cost them several months to get to the destination only by walking, or riding a horse. While in contemporary life, a business man in China in the day can get to the United States to make a contract at night by plane. In our daily life, with the coming of the lift, there is no need for people to walk up and down and thus saving lots of time. In addition, with the development of calculator, people can find a solution to a complex mathematical question in few minutes. Furthermore, with the development of internet, people can get what he wants to know quickly by searching information online.
It is true that along with those luxuries and conveniences' beneficial for enhancing our efficiency, people seem to more and more depend on them. I once saw a girl went to the second floor by the lift while there were only a few steps from the first floor to the second floor. In fact, a survey made by the Social investigating organization indicated that the reason that people are less healthy than before partially due to the lift. When it comes to the coming of calculator, now my ten-year-old brother almost depend on it every time when he needs to calculate something, even in solving the simplist mathematical question that eight plus six, he uses it. Furthermore, I find that more and more classmates incline to search answers on the internet by Baidu or google just to finish the assignment that teachers made without considering by themselves.
However, if one has his own thoughts before enjoying those luxuries and conveniences, things may be different. As the examples stated above, if people take the elevate as a tool to promote the efficiency rather than a mean to be lazy. For example, if you have to go to the 20th floor in urgency, at this situation it seems foolish if you do not use a lift. When it comes to calculator, rather than using calculator in solving simple mathematical questions, aerospace scientists exploit advancing calculator in finding answers to complicated mathematical problems after having a deliberate consideration what problems they need to solve. To this degree, the calculator is just used as a tool to solve some problem and it cannot prevent those scientists to be truly great scientists. The same thing can be said of searching information online. If one has to hand on a paper and he searches some necessary information about the paper online after consideration about what he needs to know in order to accomplish the paper, in this aspect, the Internet does not prevent him to be a thoughtful person.
In conclusion, what determines that whether people can be truly strong and independent individuals is the attitudes and methods how to use those luxuries and conveniences and it is necessary for us to be aware the reasonable use of luxuries and conveniences.
