正确答案是E，ABC可以很容易排除，个人感觉D也是可以的。另外E中thus even when的结构怎么理解呢？

而in this way能不能这么用我就不知道了.....remains in diamond,应该也行吧？这个要请NN出来了

thus应该是作副词，表示“如此”的意思~~我找了一圈，也没看到thus可以作代词·~~

remains in this way会让人产生carbon一直处于 "changes into the substance commonly referred to as diamond "这样的动态的过程中，而不是diamond这种物质静态中。后面的让步状语从句更加强了这种感觉。而even when是带有让步语气的时间状语从句，比较倾向于表达静态的意思。
