Issue 53 If a goal is worthy, then any means takento attain it are justifiable. Write a response in which you discuss theextent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain yourreasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting yourposition, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might nothold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. Should any measures taken to achieve aworthy goal be justifiable ? As far as I am concerned, such an issue should bedetermined on a case-by-case bias. When considering whether a certain meansshould be taken to attain a certain aim, both the goal itself and the proposedmeans should be taken into account. Firstly, it is hard for us to determine whichgoals is worthy or not. On account of the different value system held bydifferent people, people tend to look at things from their own interest, thusthere exists no uniform standard to assess theworth of a certain goal. For example, for a business man, to pursue a hugeprofit is ultimate goal for him even though his factory have to produceproducts at the cost of environment. However, from a environmentalist'sperspective, the interest of the business man pales compared to the cleannessof environment. So the experts would not agree the merchant's view that topollute the environment is justified by his so-called worthy goal. Secondly, if we have to put up somecriteria to determine the value of a certain aim, in my view, a revenue-costanalysis is indispensable. The value of a goal should be determine by itselfand the price we have to pay by using a certain measure to achieve it. Considerthe goal of almost countries in the world, namely to strengthen the power oftheir country. At the first glance, everyone might agree that this isundoubtedly a worthy goal. However, should any means taken to attain it bejustifiable. I am afraid not. There is a no denying fact that World War Two wastriggered by a motivation like this. Can this so-called worthy goal justifiedthe disasters brought by the Hitler? The answer should be no. However, if acountry booms by advancing its science and technology, such a goal should beview as worthy and the means are also reasonable. However, there still lack some uniformcriteria to determine whether the benefits we get from a goal is greater or theprice is greater. At least, when it comes to these questions, the whole warfareof human beings should be considered carefully, not only the current benefits, but also the anticipated impacts on the future. To achieve this, the advicesfrom experts in each certain field are required. In sum, since people are inclined to puttheir own interest above other things, it is hard for us to determine whether agoal is worthy or not in terms of the goal alone. Whether a goal is worthy andmeans to attain it are reasonable should be determined on the benefits and theprice we have to pay. And we have to weigh them from the interest of all peopleas the whole.
