princeton review manual的两道tricky questions

Q 1

Now even directors of off-Broadway productions, desperate for actors who are talented, charistmatic, and aspiring more to a solid career in the theater than to the lucrative rewards and stardom proffered by movie moguls and studios, are turning to independent casting directors for guidance in assembling their casts.

A are talented, charistmatic, and aspiring

B  are talented, who have charistma, and who are aspiring

C have talented are charistmatic, and aspire

D are talented and have charistma, and whose aspirations are

E are talented, charistmatic, and who aspire

毫不犹豫的选了A,一看答案是E

Q 2

Scientists now suspect that imperial mammonths of the Pleistocene period were wiped out not by human predation, as were mammoths of earlier periods, but by a sudden and extreme change in climate.

A  as were mammoths of earlier periods

B like that in an ealier period

C as in ealier periods

D as were earlier periods

E like the mammoths in an earlier period

偶选C,但是A是正确答案。 Tricky, tricky...

I agree that Q2 should be A.

However, I don't think E in Q1 is right. Maybe E should be "are talented and charistmatic, and who aspire" rather than "are talented, charistmatic, and who aspire"?

Hi Jnlvo,

Can you summarize the conditions in which we can omit "and"?

I tried to search but did not find related topic yet. Thanks.

For parallelism, and is usually needed, but when it links two adjectives/ adjectival phrases, it could be omitted.

Adjectival parallel is exceptional. For example:

930. While some academicians believe that business ethics should be integrated into every business course, others say that students will take ethics seriously only if it would be taught as a separately required course.

(A) only if it would be taught as a separately required course

(B) only if it is taught as a separate, required course

(C) if it is taught only as a course required separately

(D) if it was taught only as a separate and required courseB

(E) if it would only be taught as a required course, separately

155. Federal authorities involved in the investigation have found the local witnesses are difficult to locate, reticent. and are suspicious of strangers.

(A)  the local witnesses are difficult to locate, reticent, and are

(B)   local witnesses to be difficult to locate, reticent, and are

(C)  that local witnesses are difficult to locate, reticent, and

(D)  local witnesses are difficult to locate and reticent, and they are

(E)   that local witnesses are difficult to locate and reticent, and they are
