There is no denying that technology has greatly changed our way of life, especially when we need to
tackle some tough problems, but it does not mean our ability to think will surely be undermined with more
reliance on technology to solve problems. Technology is just an effective and efficient tool for us to solve
problems and thus to improve ourselves. It is we human beings that create this tool, not on the contrary.
Ironically, the very ability to think will decline when we are overwhelmingly addicted to exploiting
technology to solve problems.
Technology does simplify our life on solving uncreative problems and we can spare more time on
working on creative things, thus we can develop ourselves especially in creative thinking. Researchers, for
example, can use computer to test their model with mundane data. They can foucs more time and energy
on analysising the results to modify their model, avoiding spending much time on computing the model
with a mass of data. So they can find new problems in the procedures of such tedious work completed
by computers. Researchers' abilities to think more complicated, more abstract problems, thus, will be
enhanced in the way that they continue to find more practical, more valuable models. In this point, our
ability to think will be improved due to using technology to solve problems. Technology serves as a
catalyst for us to increase the ability to think.
But what is the ability to think? What constitutes our ability to think? Just as above creative thinking ability
is one of the most important parts of it. Another unneglected component is the ability to think or to
compute some basic problems. More specifically, our ability to calculate numbers indeed deteriorate. If
those researchers had had to test the model with a greate many data without computers or other
counterparts, they would get in trouble, and thus, they could not test whether their model is practical or
meet the requirements of their research. Because they would make mistakes inevitably when calculating so
many data, leaving the whole research in abeyance. The very ability to calculate plays an important role
and they could not test the model without using computers because of their weekness in calculating. So
they would rely more on computers to do such work. The more dependent on technology we are, the
more foundmental ability to do such work we are devoid of.
Both of the abilities to think are indispensable for us to solve problems whether or not we rely on
technology. Technology does have a significent influence on our ability to think. On one hand, the ability
to think will be improved when using technology to do some repeted work; on the other hand, it will
deteriorate when we rely on technology to do anything. In a word, it seems to be assertive to stand on
only one side.
