我感觉换成but就不对了。The Iroquois起初是planters，尽管怎么怎么样。换成but就成了，The Iroquois起初是planters，但是怎么怎么样。句意变了。

但是og上说这题是contrast，那就是说but不能表对比？如果but表转折的话，转折和对比有什么不同？小弟拜谢~~

but和although在逻辑意思上是有区别的
but就是表示转折，和主句是并列的关系，一个层级的感觉。
although 表转折时，是从属于主句的一个补充转折，比主句低一个层级。
本题中，主句描述了Iroquois的primary activity，用although 补充了一个supplementary activity。

这句中but 不能选的另一个原因是but后面的supplementing变成了主句的修饰成分，其实就逻辑涵义上来说，表达的不是修饰，是转折。

问一下是只有supplementing 不能够表示转折，还是说V-ING都不能表示转折？
