Regarding advice, I would first need to understand what you expect a quant role to be like and what you expect and hope to get out of it. Since the onset of the crisis the industry has fundamentally changed, number of people employed, business prospects, job security, compensation and big bonuses, i cant give you much advice without knowing more about what motivates you. I for myself for example will be leaving the banking industry as a whole very soon, it does not give me what I seek, but thats very personal.
They havent let you experience everything yet that they expect you to deal with in exchange for money ( and I dont mean technical problems, interpersonal rudeness, disrespectful behaviour, pressure without limits etc ). Thats one of the reasons why I left.
Money makes people greedy and inhumane on sell and buy side. I tried buy Side but in a shop that wasn't good and went bankrupt quickly.
I wouldn't recommend any finance related degrees, finance is not an academic subject, most models taught are out of date, the real good stuff is kept secret in successful firms.
As you can tell with my experience I never managed to find anything interesting about finance other than tech and maths in a competitive environment. So I will go where there are human people doing that, for example google, but there are many firms that do such things now. Maybe not as much money, but happiness and health come first, many people get sick in finance if they stay long.
