答案是E,我想问一下E的over和D的during是不是一样的含义,都是表示  在...期间,
那么D,E的区别是否逻辑判断beginning in 1788 修饰的是谁,
是100 years那么E  是 period那么D
我觉得意思都一样啊!

我的理解是: D中a period beginning in 1788做同位语修饰a hundred years.而a period beginning in 1788是一个具体的概念,而a hundred years是一个泛指的概念.a period beginning in 1788的范围比a hundred years少.这样不对.
我举一例子.
你可以说:
Apple, a fruit, is good to health.
但是你不能说:
A fruit, apple, is good to health.

这里涉及的主要是引导时间的介词的用法：

1、during和in都可以表示某事发生于：
（1）某段时间整个过程；
（2）某段时间某个点；
如，He will be holiday in/during August.
      I woke up three times in/during the night.

2、during 用来强调持续某段时间。即in the period of a certain length
如，
    The test center has closed for the whole of June.(不能说in the whole...)

3、指一项活动而不是一段时间时，只能用during;
如， He had some amazing experiences during his military service.(不能说in his military service...)
试比较 He had some amazing experiences during/in his childhood.

这里的period都是表示 a certain length or portion of time
D中的period作同位语不能用来修饰during引导的介词短语，所以错；
E中的over的相当于in后面接 period...,整个作状语，而beginning...跟D一样都是修饰period;

But i think in D, a period is modified a hundred years rather than During a hundred years. So it is ok.

这里考的其实是同谓语是否具有解释力的问题。也就是作修饰语的同谓语与其修饰的名词要在概念上等同。

wdzc 说得很对，简而言之，就是 a hundred years不能用a period beginning in 1788来修饰。a hundred years只是一个时间量，而不是一个时间段，a period应该用来作一个时间段的同谓语。
