150. In the mid-1960’s a newly installed radar warning system mistook the rising of the moon as a massive missile attack by the Soviets.

(A) rising of the moon as a massive missile attack by the Soviets

(B) rising of the moon for a massive Soviet missile attack

(C) moon rising to a massive missile attack by the Soviets

(D) moon as it was rising for a massive Soviet missile attackB

(E) rise of the moon as a massive Soviet missile attack

此题拙见应以逻辑意思为根据决定使用moon 或 the rising of the moon来作为宾语核心.

1
to understand something wrongly
She mistook my meaning entirely. Ken mistook her concern, thinking she was interested in him for another reason.
2
you can't mistake somebody/something
used to say that someone or something is very easy to recognize
You can't mistake her. She's the one with the long red hair.
3
there is no mistaking somebody/something
used to say that you are certain about something
There's no mistaking whose children they are - they all look just like Joe.
mistake somebody/something for somebody/something phrasal verb
to wrongly think that one person or thing is someone or something else
A woman mistook him for a well-known actor, and asked him for his autograph. The doctor mistook the symptoms for blood poisoning.

不难看出,mistake sth(sb)或 mistake sth(sb) for sth(sb).

To be discussed......

The original meaning of the sentence is "mistook the rising...for a massive Soviet missile attack". In another word, the rising of the moon is wrongly considered a massive Soviet missile attack.

But by making "for a massive Soviet missile attack" directly follow the verb, "was rising", D distorts the the above statement. It comes to convery a new idea that "the moon was rising for a massive Soviet missile attack", which means "for a massive Soviet missile attack" is the goal of the moon's rising.

a newly installed radar warning system mistook the moon as it was rising for a massive Soviet missile attack.

mistake the moon... for a massive Soviet missile attack

sun/moon/star

to appear in the sky
[≠ set]:

The sun rises in the east.

所以,rise of the moon是nonidomatic的

这也是OG说rise of the moon是nonidiomatic的原因.

再看OG52, A中的the rising of cost不正确, 是因为表示cost的上升应用rise的名词形式却用了rising动名词. The rising of costs is unidiomatic ,而C中的the rising cost, rising做形容词修饰cost表正在进行的状态,中心词是cost满足主谓一致.

不好意思啊,我实在不明白你们为什么都说rise没有实际物体空间位置上升的含义,我查了下Encarta, W-M, 都说rise在做名词时,可以表示emergence (as of the sun) brove the horizon啊!!!!!!!!!!

    rise   none

When you are talking about the thing that has risen, the most usual preposition to use after  rise  is  in .

Don't say 'a rise of something', say  a rise in something :

There has been a 2% rise in the rate of unemployment.

Remember:  when  rise  is followed by an amount, the correct preposition is  of :

There has been a rise of 2%.
