“In Japan elderly people are treated with far greater respect than theyare in most Western countries      这里的they指的是老年人,而非Japan的老年人”
如果这里的In Japan 是修饰elderly people,这个they不就是指日本的老年人么?而In Japan紧靠elderly people,不就很ambiguous么?

In 1981 children in the United States

spent an averageof slightly less than two and a half hours a week doinghousehold chores; by 1997theyhad spent nearly six hours a week.

In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doinghousehold chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.

In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doinghousehold chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.

A.chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hoursa week

B.chores; by 1997 that figure had grown to nearlysix hours a week

C.chores, whereas nearly six hours a week werespent in 1997

D.chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a week in 1997

E.chores, that figure growing to nearly six hours a week in 1997

而此处,D完全可以是 less than two and a half hours这个figure和nearly six hours a week比较,比较对等,符合逻辑。

1. In Japan elderly people 你可以看成,In Japan, elderly people...
这里的IN JAPAN只是说了一下地点,而不是people的修饰成分,they只能指代people
2.而children in the United States,in the US是children的后置定语,是一个整体,所以指代全部,但是1981和1997的孩子已经不是一样的孩子了,所以they不可以。
3. only use过去完成时 when you want to 强调 the sequence of events(Manhattan)

而by 有到....
*****
D:In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doinghousehold chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a week in 1997.

a figure of  nearly six hours a week 的表达不好,感觉有点wordy;我主要觉得是有修饰歧义的嫌疑,seems to modify the antecedent right before the comma ,"chores"。

In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doinghousehold chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.

我请问,什么叫做"by 1997 they had spent..."
那我们把they换成children in the United States:
"by 1997 children in the United States had spent nearly six hours a week"
如果这时在交谈,我迫不及待会接着你的话问:"on what? you just said the children had spent this amount of time, but ON WHAT?"
spent nearly six hours a week on study? on playing? on housework?
You should explicitly define it!

a ratio=41
the ration of X:Y=41 (详细定义X和Y分别是什么)
