Helen: It was wrong of my brother Mark to tell our mother that the reason he had missed her birthday party the evening before was that he had been in a traffic accident and that by the time he was released from the hospital emergency room the party was long over. Saying something that is false can never be other than morally wrong, and there had been no such accident - Mark had simply forgotten all about the party.

这里的意思是说因为原题前面说的是'it was wrong", 而后面的principle是"morally wrong"吗？

这里的general principle是指“something that is false can never be other than morally wrong”--“虚假的事在道德上永远不可能是正确的”。“a particular case”是指mark lying这件事，helen试图要justify的judgment就是mark lying是wrong的。在这里Helen就是借用这个principle（因为说假话在道德上都是不对的），来证明，mark在这个lying的case里是不对的。虽然结论很容易得到大家赞同，但是，本身用作论据的这个principle却可能引起质疑。因为并不一定说假话就一定是不道德的。有时候tell a white lie不仅不是害人，反而可能可以救人。所以说helen这段话的逻辑问题在于attempts to justify a judgment about a particular case by citing a general principle that stands in far greater need of support than does the particular judgment.
