Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
I partly agree the notion that scandals are effective to some extent since they can attract people’s attention more easily than a speaker or a reformer’s claims. However, scandals sometimes are so exaggerated and distorted intentionally that they are not so much authentic and useful. Below are my reasons to support my stance on this issue.
In the beginning, it is commonly admitted that scandals always play a useful role in politics. The government not only has the right to implement policies, but also control the allocation of the national revenue. Although the corruption of politicians cannot absolutely be accepted and forgiven, many officers are still exposed to bribery. In China, Prime Minister Zhu investigated and dealt with a large number of corrupt officials in the past decade. Besides, he published the corrupt scandals to the world in order to warn those people who accept the bribe would be severely punished. It is exactly due to the exposure of the scandals so that the phenomena of bribery has undermined in recent years.
In addition, in business field, scandals can effectively prevent the vicious competitions. No one doubts the importance of a good reputation to an enterprise. If the company is entangled in scandals, its business will be affected inevitably. Take Microsoft Corporation for example, it attempted to monopolize the market in order to make more profit. The exposure of this scandal ended up with an accusation against Microsoft because it violated the antitrust law and broke the rules of fair competitions. The scandal enforced Microsoft to pay a heavy price, and alerts us to keep fair competitions and protect the interest of customers.
However, scandals produce a controversial effect in the entertainment industry. It seems not surprising that many actors or actresses produce their own scandals in order to make themselves on the headlines of newspaper and websites. But in general scandals are not welcome by the stars because media often exaggerate the fact and unduly expose their promiscuous private life. They feel deeply hurt by the negative reports. Some stars therefore encounter serious mental damage, and some actresses even choose suicide. In this case, scandals are not useful, but harmful, which may destroy one’s life.
To sum up, compared to speaker or reformer’s claims, scandals indeed can focus our attentions on problems since we are easily impressed by bad things, but we cannot draw a hasty conclusion whether scandals are useful or not. On some occasions, they are effective and beneficial, while in other aspects, they exert a negative effect. |
