what are the differences between Banking and Research, in terms of job content, pay,  ...

IBanking (usually called Investment banking division, IBD) provides advisory services to corporate clients on deals e.g. M&A, IPO or Debt issuance....

Research provides insight on industry or listed companies to investors. For example, when Jumei had an IPO, Goldman Sachs IBD worked as their adviser, and Goldman's research department write up the reports, give the target price and ratings.

Both depts are notoriously long hour ones.  Both have good opportunities to PE/VC.
