Rising inventories, when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead to production cutbacks that would hamper economic growth,

(A)    when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead

(B)     when not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, possibly leads

(C)    when they were unaccompanied by corresponding sales increases, can lead

(D)    if not accompanied by correspondingly increased sales, possibly leads

(E)     if not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, can lead

先通过主谓一致排除B,D,C通过时态排除,求问A比之E哪儿不对,og上说unacompanied corresponding  is awkward and ambiguous,为什么不对呢,求帮助
when和if有什么区别

这题我找到的最好的解释:
by e-gmat   http://www.beatthegmat.com/rising-inventories-t18928.html

Choice A: Rising inventories, when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead to production cutbacks.
To determine whether the modifier "correspondingly" is placed appropriately or not, read the sentence and ask yourself, what should correspondingly modify.

Thought process:  Inventories are rising...the sentence indicates that if these rising inventories are not accompanied by increases in sales, then something happens...So rising inventories-corresponding increases in sales.  Thus, corresponding should modify the increases in sales.

Now, lets check what "correspondingly" modifies - it seems to modify the verb - unaccompanied and hence the placement is not correct.

Choice D: Rising inventories, is not accompanied by correspondingly increased sales, possibly leads to production cutbacks.
In this sentence, correspondingly modifies increased sales.  However, notice that in the original sentence, the author is talking about trends - rising inventories and increases in sales.  Choice D, on the other hand, talks about trend in inventories but a specific value of sales - INCREASED sales.  Thus, it does not communicate the intended meaning of the original sentence.  And hence is incorrect.

我觉得通过主谓一致以及when的排除很多地方都不到位。
有些个人看法贴在这里,大家看到了可以一起讨论讨论 ...

‘ Rise’ is an intransitive verb. In English gramma, an intransitive verb can’t take a direct object in a sentence.
Therefore, rising invetories cannot be simple gerund and 'rising' here modifies inventories. The forms of the verb should be plural, apparently.

When 引导从句不能表示条件,此句摘自PREP语法笔记。
OG里应该不会有此结论因为这应该属于基础语法点和单词的释义,是字典的任务。Longman中即有明确的解释:
1
at what time
When are we leaving? When did you first meet Dr Darnall? When will the work be finished? I don't know when I'll see her again.
when to do something
I'll tell you when to stop.
2
at or during the time that something happens
Leonard was nine when his father died. When the family came here from Russia, they were penniless. When he was in the airforce he flew Tornado jets.
3
after or as soon as something happens
When the meal was finished, Rachel washed up and made coffee. I'll phone you again when I get home.
4
used to mention a type of event or situation when talking about what happens on occasions of that type
When lead is added to petrol, it improves the car's performance. When mixed with water the powder forms a smooth paste. He always wears glasses except when playing football.
5
used to show which particular time or occasion you are talking about
The best moment was when Barnes scored the winning goal. There are times when I hate him. the day/time/afternoon etc when She remembered the day when Paula had first walked into her office.
6
by/since when
before or since which time
The baby is due in May, by when the new house should be finished. That was written in 1946, since when the education system has undergone great changes.
7
since when ...?
spoken used to show that you are very surprised or angry
Since when have you been interested in my feelings?
8
even though something is true
Why does she steal things when she could easily afford to buy them?
9
used to introduce a fact or statement that makes something seem surprising
When you consider that the airline handled 80 million passengers last year, the accident figures are really very small.

解释很权威,明确表示When没有条件如果的含义,只是在中文里讲“当……的时候”往往既可以表示时间也可以讲条件,此处与英文思想不同往往容易导致理解上的偏差,正如此题

在GMAT里IF只能表示”如果“,而且只在条件状语使用。假如要在宾语从句中表示”是否“,只能用WHETHER,不能用if。When只表示”当什么时候“(具体有时间概念),在GMAT里没有”如果“的意思。

举例:IF I WERE YOU 是绝不能表达成 WHEN I WERE YOU的
          WHEN I WAS A CHILD 和IF I WERE A CHILD,前者表示时间,后者才表示”如果...“

O(∩_∩)O~前两个点是搜以前的帖子找到的前辈的话,然后第三个是自己词典找的,不过还是有个疑问,unaccompanied correspondingly is  awkward and ambiguous?

哈,我就是看你的贴子才发现原先自己没理解unaccompanied还有这么多意思,怪不得OG说ambiguous...

你说:
unaccompanied correspondingly is  awkward and ambiguous?

我的理解,否定的形容词后面再加副词,感觉确实有歧义
OPTION A.   NOT (accompanied correspondingly) by
OPTION B.   (not accompanied) CORRESPONDINGLY by
不知道我表示清楚没有,括号里是一个意群
就算OPTION A里面,NOT () 这种,也分为部分否定和全否定,是"accompanied但非correspondingly",还是"压根就没有accompanied"?
OPTION B其实就是"非accompanied,但是这个非accompanied的状态是correspondingly"

而E.  If not accompanied by corresponding ...
就很清晰

赞ls,很透彻啊~

但unaccompanied correspondingly就已经否定accompanied,(*^__^*) 嘻嘻……你看成了   not accompanied correspondingly
以下是引用oncross在2006-7-4 4:23:00的发言:
Did MM refer to OG10-37:
37.While some academicians believe that business ethics should be integrated into every business course, others say that students will take ethics seriously only if it would be taught as a separately required course.
(A) only if it would be taught as a separately required course
(B) only if it is taught as a separate, required course
(C) if it is taught only as a course required separately
(D) if it was taught only as a separate and required courseB
(E) if it would only be taught as a required course, separately
Also, the intended meaning is distorted when the adverb separately is used to modify required, as in A and C, or taught, as in E; B correctly uses the adjective separate to modify course.现在我也混了,还是表想这么多啦,通过unaccompany和not accompany或者when和if就可以排除鸟~~抓紧总结下一题,og总结真是很费时费精力的事情,一起加油咯!!

我是来发坏的。。。
自己查这个题目的时候本来自己对when和if的理解基本上同suri的总结,然后在BTG论坛上看到一个哥们儿的解释(还是个instructor),粘贴如下:

Great question! The difference between 'when' and 'if' is a subtle one. Indeed, in many cases the two are interchangeable. Let's have a look:
'If' and 'When' are interchangeable if the outcome is clear.
When John runs 5 miles, he sweats.
If John runs 5 miles, he sweats.
John's sweating is definite. No matter what, he will sweat if/when he runs 5 miles. Thus the outcome is clear and we can use either 'when' or 'if.'
'If' and 'When' are NOT interchangeable if the outcome is not clear. That is we are dealing with the Conditional Tense. Then we want 'if.'
It's hot outside, so John may sweat, if he runs one miles. CORRECT
It's hot outside, so John may sweat, when he runs one mile. INCORRECT
In the question above, we have an outcome that is not definite: inventories...can lead.
Therefore, we want 'if' not 'when.' Because we have inventories, (D) is incorrect (...leads).
Hope that helps  .
不过我个人对以上解释持怀疑态度,个人还是比较相信原来的总结。。。
