------------------------时间的分割线------------------------------
大家好~babybearmm 刚加入4月梦之队,决定从今天起坚持每天记录进度,欢迎各位朋友讨论、指导、监督!

简单介绍下自己:在美国top 50某校读生物Ph.D.数年,也经历过pharm industry的实习,发现——Ph.D. in bio is not for me! 于是决定转行,念MBA或者MSF,于是重新回到了CD——这个曾经给我莫大帮助的地方。当时出国前,iBT 107,GRE 1310,成绩都已过了有效期。那时候备考G时间太紧,红宝书也就勉强过了2遍还没怎么做题,成绩也就勉强够用。这次考GMAT我会吸取教训, 充分地复习,不留下遗憾。我暂定在6.5之后考新GMAT,因为感觉IR比Issue更适合我。

============计划==========

SC
Manhattan
finished! (习题做了部分章节)
OG12 finished! 错题很多涉及verbform,重读了manhattanverb那章和Chpt13ver部分,并做verb相关练习题)。

1/17 gmatclubidioms test 23/32,看MR-sentencecorrection guideidiom部分 ,整理了idiom文件夹总结时候看
PREP语法笔记0807
——搁置,先竖着总结OG,再通过练prep题目找感觉 (2.18更新)

:题型,错误选项特征

http://forum.chasedream.com/GMAT_Preparation/thread-646433-1-1.html?extparms=ThreadCatalogID%3d3%26page%3d1
计划:1. 根据Manhattan的分类刷一遍,熟练掌握每类考点的出题方式、错误选项特征
       1.5 看看那些知识点需要加强,在这里找课堂录像(要是时间充分,verbal部分的课都听,Ron讲得真太好了!)
       http://www.manhattangmat.com/thursdays-with-ron.cfm

http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/store-item/grockit-free-ogtv-all-og-questions-explained-for-free
这个网站注册之后,似乎75h内免费

我正在玩practice game呢,可以单人模式或者多人竞赛模式,玩了一组advanced CR,每道题限时间2'30'',都是很长的bold-face,很有挑战啊。时间到就可以看详解。每道题的做题时间和review时间都有倒计时,不过你准备好了就可以continue. 带统计功能,然后一组练习结束之后可以看instructor的视频讲解。挺不错的。

这题我也做错了...

Because land based wells require more digging, calculations for estimating the amount of oil in an oil well do not apply as well to them as they do to deep sea wells.
A.
B. it as it does to deep sea wells
C. calculations as land based wells do to deep sea wells
D. land based wells as it does to deep sea wells

BCD逻辑意思都严重不对:
B/D. it does  单复数不对
C. 逻辑混乱
所以就说在pronoun这块,绝对的规则只有2条,1. the antecedent must exist; 2. agreement (singular/plural)
这两条似乎是废话,天下人都知道。对,绝对的规则就是废话,是公理。
其实A,从逻辑意思上看,them, they指代对象都非常明确(无歧义),都在句子中exist,都是复数,那么就ok。

我试着造个句子:
Because a pronoun is more context-restricted, the touch-rule does not apply as well to it as it does to a noun modifier.
检验指代是否模糊的方法,就是代入法,看是否make sense。
比如这里,假如第一个it你认为指代"the touch-rule",那么"the touch-rule does not apply as well to the touch-rule ..." 完全non-sense!!
同理检验下一个it. 能发现这里两个it指代都非常明确。

没有“一个句子里代词指代必须一致”的绝对规则....在e-gmat那个答疑板上instructor给了回答:

While the children played with their toys in the sand, the parentscontinued their chatter on thepark bench.

While the children played with their toys in the sand, they also told theirparents to stay around them.

In this sentence, the context clarifies that all pronouns should refer to"children" and there is no ambiguity at all even though anotherplural noun - parents is present in the sentence.

参见我整理的附件

看完e-gmat的课程 我有点疑惑
一个句子里面的相同代词可以指代不同的词么?  不算指代模糊么
-- by 会员 南瓜0729 (2012/3/6 16:35:27)

同有这个疑惑,有几个题目相同的代词代表不同的意思,我都做错了

谢谢大家

刚看到一个很好的贴子,各方nn大论SC解题之道,这个必须分享!
http://www.beatthegmat.com/sc-strategy-and-the-approach-t109899.html#464202

In fact, science is characterized by its artistic nature, which unfortunately appeals only to scientists.

[教授将unfortunately改成often,"I'm sure some others appeal to"]
这充分体现了逻辑思维严密性啊!就正如在CR里面,我们要特别留意often, usually等等词汇,看看作者的scope。另外,我的原词"unfortunately"带有一定的主观性,学术文章尽量避免,这里去掉。

As an analogue, a Mozart’s symphony may sound beautiful to everyone, simply because of its enjoyable melody. However, this beauty is superficial. If you dig into the lines of scores and dissect them, you will figure out some elegant “grammars”, and finally when integrating them together you will appreciate the delicate organization of the grandeur musical architecture. This underlying beauty strikes thoughtful listeners in a totally new way, and will lead them to a portal of tremendous treasure.
[analogue改为analogy。 "everyone,"那个逗号去掉!!! grammars改成grammar。"a portal of tremendous treasure"被评价为"nice phrasing",最后一句老师特别喜欢,批语"I really like this & agree with it".]

In fact, the molecular beauty may come from its static geometry, or its versatile reactions, all of which is appreciable to chemist.
[同样的,逗号去掉!最后一个分句错误百出,改为"both of which are appreciated by the chemist"]
这句话似乎可以编个SC题目了哈,考点:all vs. both, S-V agreement, Rhetorical construction....
注意到老师把"be appreciable to chemist"改成了"be appreciated by the chemist".....严格说来算不上语法错误,但改动之后显然更好。嗯,GMAT prefers verbs to adjectives. 学术文章中也是如此。

This rule indeed suits the aesthetic criteria which favor simplicity and symmetry, just as the architecture of the Forbidden City.
[which改为that. 老师还要求在句末注明reference (the architecture of the Forbidden City的参考文献)。]

This is exactly the same property that characterizes an ideal artistic creation, which is continually polished toward perfect.
[老师的改动是:把红色部分统统去掉。]
这就是为什么GMAT不喜欢强调句,因为学术英语里面很少需要用到!学术英语追求简洁、清晰,尽量避免无意义的复杂结构。

这篇最后,老师特别指出我需要注意的有:
learn appropriate use of "that" vs "which"
watch use of commas

复习GMAT的同学们,相信你们不会犯我当初这样的错误吧

如果朋友们喜欢,我可以每天贴几个我当初的句子,大家可以尽管踩啊扔鸡蛋啊,然后下一天我再贴出教授的评改。

看到Ron讲methodology太有启发了,发上来分享........
他自己没受过学院派的语法学习,能把SC给学生讲那么清楚那么深刻,他说他讲的那些语法知识都是捉摸OG出来的
    -研究OG正确句子,要包括非划线部分-

well ... if you've actually studied a thousand SC problems, i can definitely tell that you aren't studying in the right way.
if you've gotten through that many problems, that means that you're just going through problem after problem after problem after problem and just solving the problems, spending little to no time on review.

no matter what you're studying, make sure that you study with the appropriate DEPTH, not just BREADTH.
in particular, you should try to RELATE problems to each other, and look for GENERALIZABLE lessons, in order to gain the maximum benefit from your practice.

THE PROBLEMS ON THE TEST ARE NOT GOING TO LOOK LIKE THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS!
IF YOU JUST MEMORIZE/REMEMBER THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS EXACTLY AS YOU SAW THEM, THEY WILL HAVE NO VALUE!

they may even have negative value, if the same constructions happen to be used in different ways on the official test.

--

for EVERY problem:
* don't concentrate on the solution to that actual problem, since you can be sure you aren't going to see that actual problem on the exam
* instead, try to find TAKEAWAYS from the problem, which you can then APPLY TO OTHER PROBLEMS.  this is key - DO NOT LEAVE A PROBLEM until you have extracted at least one piece of information, whether a formula, a strategy, a trick/trap, etc., that you can apply to OTHER problems.
do not leave a problem until you can fill in the following sentence, meaningfully and nontrivially:
"if i see _____ ON ANOTHER PROBLEM, i should _____"

for EVERY OFFICIAL SC problem:
be able to explain every aspect of every construction in the correct answer choice -- including the parts that are not underlined.  (remember, this is the only place where you can be 100% assured of finding constructions that are correct!)
this means that you should be able to explain both the grammar and the meaning of everything those choices -- again, including the stuff that isn't underlined.

if you do what i've suggested above -- especially with the correct answers** -- you will probably find that the OG12 alone provides enough SC material for at least a couple of months of study.

honestly, if you put that together with the manhattan SC guide, you should already have more than enough material.  quantity is not quality, and, after a certain point (which you have long ago passed if you have actually solved 956 problems), quantity and quality become each other's enemies.

--

**i'll let you in on a little secret here: studying the correct answers in this way is really the hidden weapon on this test.

fun fact:
before i started teaching the gmat, i had zero formal training in english grammar -- i'd never studied it academically, and had basically no idea of any of the non-basic rules that i talk about here.  (instead, for SC i relied only upon my experience as a professional editor/writer and upon my sheer exposure to tons and tons and tons of material written in highly formal, scholarly english.  even though i didn't know any of the actual grammar rules, my experience allowed me to identify "right" and "wrong" immediately and almost instinctually without any sort of formal breakdown -- much as people are able to identify the nature of, say, facial expressions without having to break them down muscle by muscle.  for all practical purposes, that sort of approach is impossible for non-native speakers of english.)
here's the fun part:
every single thing i've ever posted on this forum about english grammar, i learned by studying correct answers to official SC problems.
this is not an exaggeration.
here was the process:
* study a correct answer
* justify the use (= grammar and meaning) of EVERY construction in the correct answer
* attempt to generalize the result
* if the generalization is questionable, search other official SC problems for the same construction, and see whether the generalization works.

Diary 1/18

Read some posts onMGMAT Blog, learnt a lot!
Take-homes:
1. Layering in SC Qs:

extract the core, study how the extras fit into the core(how the test-makers create the Q)
2. Verbal strategies:
SC: How GMAC makes certain controversial calls? Train ur ears
CR/RC: take stripped-down notes; practice on what ur hate & pretend tobe interested; review to find the proof
My RC speed: 123 words/44s  ~understood (168 per min)

SC - Verbal Review 2nd
#36- 60, Incorrect/Total = 6/25, 4 on idioms, 2 ongrammatical constructions
Timing: Most Q < 75s, but long underlines took extra-longtime! (>3min20s for Q57) .

Diary 1/19
