44. In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for society to regard any living man or woman as a hero.
With the mass popularity of heros' stories in plots and movies nowadays, it seems that people are in fact favoring the existence of heros in the real world. However, why does the image of heros so diffcult to find in the television nowadays? Are heros not possible to exist any more? From my perspective, heros still exist, if the definition of heros are broaden, but they are not favourable to be revealed.
Admittedly, due to the pellucidity of the media and the advancement in technology, most of the supernatural phenomena could be easily explained and transmitted to the public, therefore the public is not likely to believe in the existence of any supernatural heros, as in the science fictions and movies. Instead of waiting the show-up of the Batman to fight against the evil, people are relied on the police and arthorities. Therefore, if defining heros as beings with supernatural powers, they are not likely to be found nowadays.
Additionally, for those countries where heroism is still favoured, the credibility of hero propaganda is questioned. It is not difficult to find that most of these countries, such as Cuba and North Korea, are ruled under aristocracy and dictatorship. Therefore, in these places, heros could be served as the tools for the government to advocate the well-being of citizens, or even the diffraction of public focus on their terrible governing. For instance, North Korea, where is ruled under the King's dominance, is putting significant effort on sculpturing the heroine figure of the King in order to have all the people to admire and obey their leader. While the North Koreans are not aware that it is the terrible governance that resulted in the poor economy development.
However, if defining heros as the people who have significant achievement to their field,I believe heros do exist. Neverthetheless, the revealation of heros are still an issue.
In a present age where the media is following the taste of the public, it is less likely to broadcast the accomplishments of heros since they are not very attractive to the public anymore. It may sound unfamiliar and thus boring to people on great scientific achievements completed by the scientist, or artists who have completed a master piece. According to the trend of television programs it could be observed that what people really cares are the aspects relative to their lives, such as the economy development of the country, or the subjects that bring relaxation and enjoyment, such as music and movies.
In the age when people draw little attention to the scientific and cultural development, I believe it is necessary to start the propagation of the "heroic achievements"-scientific, artistic and any other great accomplishments. With this approach, their achievements would be recognized by the public, which not only improves the awareness of the public towards these fields, but also provides higher possibilities for scientists and artists to obtain sufficient funds for further reasearch and development.
In conclusion, it is to be admit that the believe in supernatural heros are no longer existed due to the media coverage and scientific development. Yet if heros are defined as people with great achievement on their fields, they not only indeed existed but also requires more attention from the public than now. |
