Hi, I am LDS and have been since I was a little kid. There is an association for international students in the MBA program that provides all kinds of fun activities for all international students. When I go to those activities, I never think to just socialize with LDS only. Also, even in school with other classmates, you can't tell who is or who is not LDS, there is no name tags or special badges that identify who goes to the LDS church or not. There are numerous congregations, so everyone goes to a different congregation every Sunday and you rarely see your classmates in the same congregation so you really can't tell who is and who is not.

The religion part wouldn't be my biggest concern. You will be surprised to find very nice people to work with and make friends with. This is just my personal opinion. I can find some other non-LDS classmates to provide you with their feedback.

Whether it is easy to switch to corporate finance or not have a lot to do with how diligent the student is and what exactly the companies are looking for. Many f500 companies come to BYU to recruit and recruiters assume if you can get in BYU, you have the aptitude to do well. But some companies look more for technical skills and prior experiences. For example, I have no corporate finance background and got two corporate finance offers.

There are about 150 to 200 Chinese students in BYU. Most of them are non-LDS. In general, Chinese students are easy-going, friendly, and helpful. You could get many friends here in a short time if you want to.We have a CSSA (Chinese students & Scholars Association). CSSA will organize several activities each year. The two biggest activities are Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese new year. It is also easy to make friends with natives. The local church community will invite you attend the church activities, usually with free food. If you want to make more native friends, just go and have fun. They will not push you for the religion.
The social activities for non-LDS students include parties, games, basketball group... It might be hard to find good night-life if you come from a big city and like bar style. For MBA, the night time is usually contributed to the homework and job searching because of the the tense study.
In the holiday or a small break, there are too many choices for fun, such as skiing (if you like, Utah has the best snow in the world according to ads and the skiing place is located only 30 min or less driving), national parks (Utah might have the most national parks in US), Great Canyon (4 hours driving), Las Vegas (5 hours driving), South California (9 hours driving, I just went there in this Christmas), Yellowstone (9 hours driving), San Francisco (10 hours driving)... I used five years for these places and still left some of them.
My background is on technology. My current track is finance. In my opinion, finance does not have any differences with other career change. The math is not hard. As long as you put reasonable time for the class, there will be not any problems.
Hope it is helpful a little bit.

Hey,

Are you non-LDS as well? How is the community of non-LDS international students there at BYU? Do they have much to do? Are they isolated from the majority? Can you please advise about the social life for an non-LDS international student?

Also, without a background in finance, is it easy to switch and start a career in corporate finance (f500)? I can tell CF and HR are two of the areas that BYU apparently shines in.

Thanks a lot. I think Marriott can provide everything I need. I will certainly apply.
