I think should be "C's size" not "the C's size", no the before Colorado.

There is only 1 colorado.

我想这里的双重所有格应该是这么理解的

an area about the size of C是说这块地的面积和C 这个地方差不多大

an area about the size of C's是说这块地的面积和C这个地方的某一块地差不多大

for example：

He is a friend of your husband's.他是你丈夫的一个朋友（强调你丈夫的朋友不只一个）

He is a friend of your husband. 他是你丈夫的朋友。（强调他对你丈夫的友好，是朋友不是敌人）

另外，这里an area that is about the size of C,如果把它看成是同位语从句的话，那么that is 好像就不可以省了吧!

an area about the size of Colorado's　语意重复
而Colorado是无生命的
所以应该用the size of Colorado
只有人或动物的所有格可以用's表示
