24. “A powerful business leader has far more opportunity to influence the course of a community or a nation than does any government official.”




Who will have more opportunities to influence the course of a community or a nation—a powerful business leader or a government official? Some people hold the opinion that government official can better control the community or the nation, citing that they can manage far more comprehensive aspects in the society. As far as I am concerned, however, it is powerful business leaders who can influence a society more deeply.



Admittedly, government officials do take control of a society to a larger extent. They can enforce a new statute or regulation to inform people what is accepted by law now. The provisions in the law will certainly have a much more profound and far-reaching impact on the society, influencing both what people do and how they think. And also, the government officials can deal with the problems in the cultural industry, which is difficult for a business leader to influence.



Nevertheless, we should not forget the process of decision-making in the government and in the company. A government official seems to be powerful, because he or she can regulate lots of things. With close scrutiny, however, we will find that it is not the government officials who really make the decisions. Take the separation of the three powers for example. The Constitution divides the government into three branches: the legislative, the executive and the judicial. The people who make decisions are not people who actually take actions; and the people who make decisions are not people who supervise the others. In this way, power is divided among different groups, thus it would be dubious to assert that government officials have the authority to influence the whole community or the nation. In the contrast, business leaders are able to make decisions more freely in the company.



In addition, it is well acknowledged that economic foundation determines superstructure. The course of a nation and the well-being of the citizens are all based on the economy. Thus, it is never an exaggeration to assert that business leaders can change a community or a nation. It is businessmen who bring new products into our daily life, making it much more convenient and colorful. And it is businesspersons who create large amounts of wealth for our nation, making it far more powerful.



In conclusion, issue of who really affect a community or a nation more is a complex one, requiring subjective judgment. Consequently, there are no easy and certain answers. So different are the personal experiences and emotional concerns among people with diverse culture that thousand individuals might have thousand opinions. According to me, it is powerful business leaders who influence the current condition and path of development of a society more.
