With no doubt that education is animportant factor that contributes to the improvement of our society. Aseducation is directly related to the technology, economy and even thewell-being of a country, the devotion on education is constantly increasing allover the world. Despite people’s agreement on how important education is, differentpeople have different opinions on the methodology that should be used ineducation. Some people argue that the best way to teach is to praise correctand beneficial actions while ignoring those negatives one; however, it seemsnot convincing enough for someone who hold other opinions. It is definitely true that by praisingor even awarding the positive actions, a profound impression could be made topeople and thus set an example reminding people of doing right things likethat. For instance, many schools have scholarships for students who haveoutstanding academic performance during the school year. The scholarship notonly materially praises the laureate, but also encourages the owner and hisfellow students to work hard. This is a good way to point out the right trackthat students should follow. As people prefer to memorize the happythings that happened, praise is also efficient in emphasizing on the positiveactions. By praising the kids on their good actions, a long-term habit based onthose actions could be developed. If a kid is praised for washing his handsbefore the meal continuously for a short period, he is very likely to have thishabit even after he grows up. However, every coin has its two sides.Except for the advantages stated above, there are also some side effects forpraising people all along. Excessive praise could make people become defiantand self-complacent, consequently it could inhibit people from moving forward. Praise is a good way to teach, on theother hand, criticism is indispensable too. Let’s take school’s policy as anexample again. Students get praise and award for their positive actions, theyshould also be criticized for their bad behaviors. It is quite normal thatstudents are punished for their cheating and academic plagiarisms at school. Wecan imagine that what the school will be like without these penalties. Studentwill cheat in the exams and plagiarize on their homework assignments; no onewill actually study by themselves. Students will not learn anything from schoolbut waste their time there. We can see apparently that the negative actions couldnot be ignored. What is more, frustration is also helpful for one to succeed. Everyman willing to be successful should have a strong heart that they can facetowards their mistakes and the criticisms to them. Therefore, criticism ontheir negative actions will boost them up. Education is not only about teachingpeople what is good; it should also tell people what is bad. People should getpraised for their positive actions; they should be criticized for theirmistakes as well. Both praise and criticism plays an important role inteaching, the best way to teach is to keep a balance between praising andcriticizing. |
