- Barack Obama has proposed a new school lunch plan that reduces the potatoes and replace with vegetables and fruits for school meals, but some companies such as Coca Cola fight against the proposal by reasoning the preference of potatoes among children.
- This proposal will reduces the possibility of children's obesity and overweight. There are 1/3 of children are either obese or overweight, the reason is because of their school lunches involved too much potatoes on pizza, etc.
- The debate among the proponents and opponents.
1. The Agriculture industry argues that the proposal is benefit to children, and the food companies shouldn't put their profit in front of children's health.
2. The Agriculture farms and french fries companies opposed that the plan will reduce the consumption of potatoes and eventually increase the price of other food such as vegetables. 3. For some poor people, they cannot afford such increase of food price.
4. Also, the nutritionists believe that the nutrition of potatoes can be found in other vegetables as well, so children will eat vegetables as long as they cook in the way children like. However, others think that children would still love to eat potatoes without touching the vegetables.
5. If schools provide 60% meals for free, and these schools will get reimbursement from the federal government per meal. However, this reimbursement is not able to cover all the cost of food. So, for some lower income areas, people cannot afford the high price of food.
- The proposal has been rejected by the senators of US. although the bill has been approved. The new proposal might be drafted later. The authority stated that the food industry and companies have placed the children's health behind for a long time.
