MIT Sloan Essay Analysis – Essay 1 (2009) Essay 1: Please describe a time when you went beyond what was defined, expected, established, or popular. [500 words]
Right away, you can look at 500 words (or one page) and start thinking about structure. This will be 2 beefy paragraphs, or 3 very tight paragraphs. Of course, essays won’t always break down into neat little compartments, and you shouldn’t feel walled-in by any formula. This is simply an initial step you can take to condition your mind for thinking about your response… smartly.
This question really begs a great setup. As you start to take us back in time to whatever situation you’re gonna write about, it should be clear what the expected, defined, established, or popular course of action WOULD HAVE BEEN.
Such that… we are surprised to hear about what YOU did. If there’s no element of surprise, probably you didn’t do anything all that interesting.
Interestingly, your actions really needed to have simply surprised just… SOMEONE. Could have been the entire floor where you were working. Could have been your boss. Could have been your client. Could have been your co-worker. Doesn’t matter. Someone’s expectations were rocked by something you did. That’s what we want to hear about.
So there are 4 components here to consider:
1. Establishing the scenario clearly
2. Establishing what was normal or expected behavior
3. Explaining what you did
4. And WHY you did it that way
If you can hit these cleanly and effectively, you’ll be in a great starting place. Notice that “explain why it was surprising (etc)” is NOT up there. That’s because you will have demonstrated THAT it was surprising by way of contrast to what was established as expected, earlier in your essay. This is a far more elegant way of addressing that aspect.
Your explainations to the essay questions are always clear, precise, effective and get to the point directly. Really appreciate your great contribution to this forum.
