比较对象的合理性，不要总是去想什么成分该不该省略，其实我不认为老美也能说清楚，但是你给他一个句子，他一定能做对，关键是比较对象的合理性，ETS也经常会在比较后面出现一个名词性从句，或者省略主语。这里比的是不同地方的同样的东西（land values）的变化速度，what they did修饰的是什么呢？（即使没有逗号的错误），如果还原是what land values rose，这比those复杂多了。象The speed of mine is as fast as that of XiaoMing, 总不会说成是The speed of mine is as fast as what it is of XiaoMing。而且本句中逗号是需要的，否则并列关系变得不清楚,as fast as后面缺少成分。主语相互比较的时候，谓语动词是可以省略的。
