I really suggest the MSF student to start their career in Bulge Bracket Firms(Citi Global Markets, Barclay Capital, Credit Suisse, UBS Investment Banking, DB CIB, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, BofA Merill Lynch,JP Morgan) , only targeting Sales & Trading and IBD. Why? becasue if you want a further career development in finance, these two positions can be a very good strating point.
For S&T, you start as a trading assitant, helping you to build a marco based knowledge of all the markets, FICC, exotic, MM. As a junior trader, you mainly execute clients order without building a large prop position, you get familar with the markets. And after that, whether you want to be in Specilized Buy Side fund manager, a senior tader or even a , it's realtivly easy, casue you konws a lot in that nique market. Some one augres that, the trader in Bulge Bracket Firmscan not rollover their positions, that's not compeletly right. Yes the position limits are quite tight in %, but it is still large and the Bulge Bracket Firms have great support team, so it is a real good training for future buy side job. For a sales position, you may start as a Corprate sales.becasue corprate does not demand much, you get a change to build up you knowldege and figure out how, when and what to sale. For furture development, a buy side sales is a money-making job. Asset managers are very smart. being a buy side sales is just like running Las Vages, no matter how the Asset manager bets, the Casino wins a spread, as long as you keep them playing.
For IBD, it's another story......PE, VC, Consulting, some firms specilized in Equity, Distressed debt....any thing about corprate finance, you can be a killer.
Why Bulge Bracket Firms? because high quality training and they can let you touch the pits, learning from mistake and have a lots of supporting people to make you better...
